TREATING CHRONIC
DRY EYE
THERE ARE THREE KEY WAYS TO
TREAT A TYPE OF CHRONIC DRY EYE
ARTIFICIAL TEARS
Artificial tears/over-the-counter eye drops, such as REFRESH® Lubricant Eye Drops, can provide only temporary relief, but do not increase your eyes' natural ability to make their own tears. Artificial tears can be combined with prescription RESTASIS®; just allow 15 minutes between use.
TEAR DUCT OR
PUNCTAL PLUGS
Plugs are inserted by an eye doctor to close the ducts that drain tears from your eyes.
RESTASIS®
With continued use twice a day, every day, RESTASIS® may help increase your eyes' natural ability to produce tears,* which may be reduced by inflammation due to Chronic Dry Eye.
*Increased tear production was seen at 6 months.LEARN HOW RESTASIS®
CAN HELP YOUR EYES
MAKE MORE REAL TEARS.
GET THE MOST OUT OF
YOUR APPOINTMENT
SCHEDULE A MEDICAL EXAM
When booking your appointment, make sure the office staff lists it as a medical exam and not an annual vision exam. Medical insurance pays for medical exams that check for eye diseases such as Chronic Dry Eye. Vision insurance only pays for routine exams. Eye doctors accept both vision and medical insurance, depending on the reason for your visit.
MAKE YOUR VISIT COUNT
Tell your eye doctor that you want to get screened for a type of Chronic Dry Eye disease. After the screening, ask for your results and see if RESTASIS® may be right for you.
RESTASIS® and RESTASIS MultiDose® Ophthalmic Emulsion help increase your eyes’ natural ability to produce tears, which may be reduced by inflammation due to Chronic Dry Eye. RESTASIS® and RESTASIS MultiDose® did not increase tear production in patients using anti-inflammatory eye drops or tear duct plugs.
Do not use RESTASIS® and RESTASIS MultiDose® Ophthalmic Emulsion if you are allergic to any of the ingredients. Be careful not to touch the container tip to your eye or other surfaces, to help avoid eye injury and contamination. RESTASIS® and RESTASIS MultiDose® should not be used while wearing contact lenses. If contact lenses are worn, they should be removed prior to use of RESTASIS® and RESTASIS MultiDose® and may be reinserted after 15 minutes.
The most common side effect is a temporary burning sensation. Other side effects include eye redness, discharge, watery eyes, eye pain, foreign body sensation, itching, stinging, and blurred vision.
You are encouraged to report negative side effects of prescription drugs to the FDA. Visit www.fda.gov/medwatch FDA Goverment Website, or call 1-800-FDA-1088.
